Before the Dust: What to Know Before Building, Renovating, or Furnishing Your Home
Building a new home, beginning a large-scale renovation, and/or furnishing an entire residence or boutique commercial space should feel exciting—but the number of decisions involved can quickly become overwhelming. Before construction begins or the first piece of furniture is ordered, thoughtful planning can protect your investment, simplify the experience, and create a home that feels beautifully cohesive.

Begin With the Entire Home in Mind
The most successful homes are not designed one isolated room at a time. They begin with a comprehensive vision for how the entire home should look, feel, and function.
At Dwell & Gather, our process begins with listening. During our in-home “Gather Together,” we learn how you live, what you love, what is not currently working, and how you want to feel when you walk through the door. From there, we establish the overall design direction—considering the architecture, floor plans, color story, materials, furnishings, and the way one space flows into the next.
This foundational vision becomes the guiding thread behind every decision, creating a home that feels layered, collected, and uniquely yours.

Make the Important Decisions Before the Dust Begins
In a new build or renovation, every decision is connected. Floor plans influence cabinetry. Cabinetry affects plumbing and electrical placement. Lighting relates to ceiling details, furniture layouts, and how each room will ultimately be experienced.
Using CAD-based design programs, we create detailed floor plans and elevations to carefully study scale, proportion, placement, and flow. We also develop realistic renderings that allow you to envision how your finished spaces will look and feel before costly decisions are finalized.
For full-home furnishing projects, this same thoughtful planning ensures that furniture, rugs, lighting, artwork, and window treatments are properly scaled and intentionally selected to complement one another. The result is a home that feels complete—not pieced together over time through rushed or disconnected purchases.

Choose a Designer Who Remains Involved
A beautiful design plan is only the beginning. Ask who will help carry that vision through construction, procurement, and installation. (And make sure you really like them! You’ll be sharing a considerable amount of time together!)
During the process our team collaborates with architects, builders, project managers, craftspeople, and trades to help ensure the approved design is implemented with intention. We coordinate site visits, answer questions, manage orders, track deliveries, oversee receiving and inspections, and thoughtfully address the inevitable details that arise along the way. Through our Weekly Gather updates, clients remain informed without having to manage every moving part themselves.
Finally, we oversee installation and add the finishing layers (accessories) that bring warmth, personality, and soul to the home.
True luxury is not simply found in beautiful materials or furnishings. It is the confidence of knowing each detail has been considered—and the experience of true luxury service feeling, guided, and genuinely cared for from the first conversation to the final reveal and beyond.
Dwell Well.
