A 100-Year-Old Home Remodel Restores Its Charm

This award-winning remodel honors a lake home’s original character while prioritizing modern functionality
The reimagined first floor includes an open-concept kitchen

When Twin Cities-based Oho Interiors embarked on the refresh of a century-old home just one block from Lake Minnetonka and Excelsior Bay, the goal was simple: restore the residence’s character and charm, while creating functional spaces for a young family. Execution wasn’t quite as easy, however. The original structure had lost its identity through decades of mismatched renovations, and spaces lacked cohesion.

To remedy this, the first floor was reimagined to include an open-concept kitchen, living, and dining area, plus a mudroom, den, laundry, pantry, and new powder room. Upstairs, the layout was reorganized: a bedroom was added and the reconfiguration included three bedrooms, two full baths, and expanded storage. Because the home is near the lake, capturing views of the water in key spaces of the house was important, too, and informed the spatial planning.

To honor the history of the home and neighborhood context, the Oho Interiors team blended clean lines and open sightlines with their signature use of saturated colors, detailed millwork, and character-rich finishes throughout the rooms. The result is a home that feels cohesive, comfortable, and enduring—so much so, that the project took home second place honors in the Historic Renovation/Restoration (50 Years or Older) category at the 2025 Midwest Design Awards.
