Home libraries are the kind of space where cozy luxury can thrive, adorned with intentional details that showcase personal moments like beloved novels and unique artworks—and this space in an Edina home is no exception. To complete a complex, whole house renovation of the historic 1927 residence in the Edina Country Club District along Minnehaha Creek, project partners PKA Architecture and Martha Dayton Design worked closely with the clients and the Edina Heritage Preservation Commission to plan and approve the restoration, which modernized every space while preserving original details like stained glasses windows and charming woodwork. Part of the project included transforming a sunken living room into a cozy, inviting library, a space which earned second place in the Library/Study category at the 2025 Midwest Design Awards.

The original fireplace serves as the library’s centerpiece, featuring a new limestone mantel and custom white oak surround, with framed artwork and gold sconces adorning the wall above. Flanking the fireplace is an artful bar cart for evening drinks and a window bench for casual lounging with a book.
The design team also refinished the existing double doors that led to a sunroom—which is now a light-filled office—incorporating them into a wall of beautiful wood bookshelves lined with tongue-and-groove paneling and accented with library lights and a rolling ladder. Books line the shelves along with thoughtful pieces of art and decor. Tall windows let natural light pour in, and fabric curtains soften the space. Anchoring the furnishings is a rich burgundy couch, along with neutral patterned sitting chairs and a cream marbled coffee table.
