In recent years, a significant shift back to rich color and defined spaces has proven increasingly popular with homeowners, and this award-winning dining room inside an Edina colonial revival home is a primary example.

When wb builders set out to transform the space, the homeowners were looking to bring new life to their historic residence, desiring a room that was sophisticated but still displayed personality. Inspired by the family’s love of bold contrast, rich textures, and vibrant colors, the design team took a maximalist approach to the project, color drenching the space in a deep navy—both the walls and ceiling are wrapped in navy grasscloth, adding texture and depth. Preserving the home’s original built-ins was a priority, but the team still gave them a cohesive update by lining the interiors with the same grasscloth.

Velvet-like drapery—which employs a lighter polyester blend for a luxurious look that doesn’t compromise function—pairs unexpectedly with sleek acrylic curtain rods. The reflective materials, seen in the acrylic chandelier, the built-in glass, and the shimmering drapery, play well against the heavier textures of the boucle dining chairs, woven grasscloth, geometric-patterned wool rug, and bold navy-stained oak graining of the dining table.

It all results in a room that leans into drama and impact, providing the family and their guests with an immersive space to dine together. This project earned the praise of judges at the 2025 Midwest Design Awards, where it nabbed second place in the Contemporary Dining Room category.
